We are not a big manufacturer. In fact, we are the very opposite. When you think of a garment factory, you may envision a big hall full of garment workers in an assembly line, churning out pieces around the clock, cooped up in a subpar work environment and forced to work extra hours to meet the “targets.”
At TIALS Studio we prioritize ethical production and support the local community in Indonesia where our founder is from. Even though we are not certified Fairtrade, we have always implemented a Fairtrade practice since we opened our studio in 2013. We feel that it is a basic human right and garment workers should not be treated any differently.
An insight into our ethical practices at TIALS STUDIO:
- All our workers get paid a fair wage, up to 20% above the national standard.
- The working hours are 8:30am to 4:30pm or 9:00 am to 5:00 pm and our workers are free to choose which time suits their personal needs.
- Overtime hours are always compensated.
- We encourage all our staff to take breaks. A mandatory one-hour lunch break from noon to 1pm is given with lunch on the house.
- Our workers are provided health insurance and retirement plans to secure their future by BPJS and Prudential.
- We compensate up to 14 paid holidays every year on top of public national holidays.
- We maintain a safe working environment and you’re always welcome to visit us when you’re in Bali.
- Indonesia has a lot of religious and cultural backgrounds so it was important that our hiring process reflects this diversity and does not discriminate.
- 85% of our workforce is female.
Our ethical practice also extends into our production:
- We support the community and improve our carbon footprint by sourcing locally in Bali.
- We offer sustainable fabric options that we encourage our clients to use in their production.
- We are the only certified SEAQUAL manufacturer in Indonesia, meaning we can produce garments made from upcycled marine plastic.
- We support a zero plastic policy in Bali and we offer sustainable alternatives to plastic to our clients.
- We encourage off-cuts to be repurposed so nothing goes to waste. We can use off-cut fabrics when making your prototypes.
- We also repurpose fabrics into our uniforms just like the tie-dye shirts our lovely team is wearing in the photos below.
