Why are they?
A tech pack is short for a ‘technical packet’ and is a blueprint of your garment. This document provides key information and instructions to the manufacturer about your design, taking it to the first stage of production. Tech packs are complex and intricate documents and should be highly detailed, including the following as a minimum:
1. Technical Sketches
These flat sketches should be from multiple angles (front, back, side, as well as sometimes inside or close-ups if necessary) to show the garment in its entirety.
2. BOM (Bill of Materials)
This contains all the materials used in constructing the garment including all fabric, labels, threads, linings, tags etc.
3. Branding Materials
All branding materials should be detailed e.g. labels, embroidery and small prints.
4. Sample Sizes & Measurements
When developing your designs you have to provide the measurements for your sample.
5. Measurement chart
After receiving the first sample back you are then able to grade by size range and fill out the measurement chart.
As well as potentially Construction Details, Point of Measurement Diagrams, Stitches and Seams depending on the item that you are creating.
Why are they important? do i need one?
The main goal of a tech pack is to minimize the number of samples needed. A clear and comprehensive tech pack makes it more likely for the manufacturer to create a garment that perfectly matches your vision in the first sample.
Without a tech pack, your budget and time scale will be impacted, as you will be paying for samples to be created over and over until you are satisfied. Each time you repeat this process you are paying for the cost of the materials, personnel and shipping as well as creating unnecessary waste. As supporters of ethical and sustainable fashion, we believe it is important to avoid fabric waste wherever possible.
Tech packs are also used to track all comments, revisions and changes made throughout the product development process and so act as a master document that can be later referred to. Accurate tech packs can provide more precise quotations on costs. They also give security on orders as the manufacturer will be contracted to produce your garments as per the tech pack.
